Introduction:
Lilly wasn't my dog at first. She was my fiance's dog before I came in to the picture. When I first met her I thought she was just being territorial, but then I quickly found out something was not quite right...She would urinate when she wanted to get her way, bite, and try to dominate anyone in any way that she could. I watched all of the dog shows, did all of the research, tried to implement everything I learned, but nothing worked.
Soon I started to dread coming home. I didn't want to be with this dog who was ruining my life. These are some of the things Lilly did to/tried to do to me on a daily basis...
...bite me, push me down the basement stairs, pee on/next to everything my fiance or I sat on, lick water/eat snow until her stomach became hugely overstuffed and she had to vomit, bark, and the list could go on, and on...
So, there came an ultimatum...Me, or the dog...
My fiance and I came to a compromise as I pleaded to ask the vet, or I am leaving...We brought Lilly to the vet and the vet prescribed her fluoxetine. Lilly is now an 80% better dog than she was without it.
She has been diagnosed with high anxiety, (she also gets seizures from this), and behavioral issues. Lilly is not allowed to go to doggy daycare. The anxiety of all of the dogs were making her have seizures. She enjoys indoors more than outdoors, and walking one block can exhaust her.
Lilly is a 4 year old basset hound that is obsessed with drinking water, does not react when other dogs try to fight her, and has to be on a 2hr potty timer. She almost never signals to go outside, and if you miss her timer she will go in the house.
My background as a teacher / experience with special needs children helped me to be calm with her, but she has been the most frustrating being on this planet for me. I am grateful that she has taught me how to be even more patient, loving, and understanding. This page is dedicated to Lilly, and the odd adventures she has as a special needs dog.
